Mazdutide

Mazdutide is a once-weekly injection that activates both GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. It was developed by Eli Lilly with Innovent Biologics and, under the brand name Xinermei, is approved in China for weight management and type 2 diabetes. Outside China it is still being tested in clinical trials.

Approved in some countriesChecked October 2026

Approval status

Approved in China by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in June 2025 for long-term weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, and in September 2025 for blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. Outside China it is still investigational; Eli Lilly is testing it in the US.3489

What it’s used or studied for

  • Approved use

Long-term weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, approved by China's NMPA (GLORY-1 trial).345

  • Approved use

Blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, approved by China's NMPA; it lowered HbA1c and weight more than dulaglutide in the DREAMS-2 trial.36

  • Human studies

Weight loss in Chinese adults with a BMI of 30 or more, testing a higher dose than earlier trials (GLORY-2 trial).7

  • Human studies

Weight loss in US adults with obesity or overweight without diabetes, in a phase 2 trial run by Eli Lilly.8

Each label shows how strong the evidence is: an approved use, human studies, animal or lab studies only, or a popular claim with no published studies. Being studied is not the same as being proven safe or effective.

Side effects

Common

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

These come from published trials. Stomach and bowel effects were the most common and mostly mild to moderate. In the US phase 2 trial, 20% of people on the highest dose tested stopped because of side effects, mainly stomach and bowel problems.5678

Cautions

  • Outside China it is not approved. FDA has warned companies that illegally sold mazdutide falsely labeled “for research purposes” or “not for human consumption.”10
