Epitalon
Epitalon is a lab-made peptide of four amino acids (alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine). It was developed in Russia, based on epithalamin, an extract of cattle pineal gland, and is not the same substance as that extract. It is promoted for anti-aging. Most studies come from one Russian research group, and human studies are few and small.
Approval status
Not approved as a medicine in any country. A US orphan drug designation for retinitis pigmentosa, granted in 2010, was revoked in 2016. FDA had listed it among compounding substances that may pose significant safety risks. It came off that list in April 2026 after its nomination was withdrawn, but it is still not a substance pharmacies may compound with. In July 2026 FDA staff reviewed it for insomnia and advised against allowing it; news reports say FDA's advisory panel narrowly voted to recommend it.1345613
What it’s used or studied for
- Human studies
Melatonin: in a small study of middle-aged women working night shifts, an under-the-tongue spray raised a urine marker of melatonin. Sleep itself was not measured.17
- Human studies
Retinitis pigmentosa (an inherited eye disease): a small 2002 controlled study reported improvement. No larger trial has confirmed it.89
- Animal & lab only
Telomeres: in lab studies, it switched on the enzyme telomerase and lengthened telomeres, the protective ends of chromosomes, in human cells.1011
- Animal & lab only
Lifespan and tumors: in one study of mice treated throughout life, it did not change average lifespan but increased maximum lifespan and reduced leukemia.12
Each label shows how strong the evidence is: an approved use, human studies, animal or lab studies only, or a popular claim with no published studies. Being studied is not the same as being proven safe or effective.
Side effects
There are no published human safety studies. FDA found no adverse event reports, and the human studies gave few or no safety details.19
Cautions
- FDA reviewers noted a theoretical cancer risk: long-term activation of telomerase, which epitalon switches on in lab studies, could help cells become cancerous. No standard long-term cancer studies have tested this.1
- FDA warns that injected epitalon may trigger immune reactions because of clumping (aggregation) and impurities.3
- There are no data on how the body absorbs or clears epitalon.1
